Can you tell us about DSS/DHS’ mission and your role there?

I’m the Director of Partnerships for the NYC Department of Social Services, which oversees both the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and Human Resources Administration (HRA). DHS’ mission is to prevent homelessness, when possible; address street homelessness; provide safe temporary shelter to those in need; and expeditiously connect New Yorkers experiencing homelessness to appropriate services and suitable housing. We conduct this work with accountability, empathy, and equity and in partnership with not-for-profit partners who help us ensure that DHS meets its legal mandate to provide temporary, emergency shelter to those experiencing homelessness in a safe and respectful environment. As we engage in this mission, the Agency employs a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible. My role is to develop partnerships with the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors, as well as the philanthropy arena, to enhance the resources available for families and individuals residing in the shelter system.

How do you identify yourself?

I identify as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and proud adopted New Yorker. I’m originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, but I’ve considered myself a New Yorker since this amazing city adopted me from the first moment I moved here and started college at the City University of New York, where I graduated with a master’s degree in public administration. I will forever be grateful to this city and all the incredible people who have been a part of my journey; my mentors, family and friends, and everyone who I’ve encountered throughout my journey. NYC has given me so many opportunities, extraordinary experiences, taught me so many lessons, and contributed to so much growth, not only personally but also professionally. 

Why is the work you do important to you?

I have always been passionate about helping children experiencing homelessness. Since I was young, I have worked with students experiencing homelessness, and I saw firsthand how homelessness can impact someone’s life, self-esteem, and motivations. I made it my mission to help this population, and I’ve been lucky to create a career that has brought me so much joy. Collaborating with the public, private, not-for-profit, and philanthropy partners has been very rewarding because I believe that it takes a village to mobilize resources for the New Yorkers with the most need, and every day, I’m grateful to work with such an amazing group of partners who also want to contribute and make an impact on the lives of our neighbors in need.

How has partnering with the New York Junior League impacted DSS/DHS?

The New York Junior League (NYJL) has been an extraordinary partner. We first developed the HomeNow Kits initiative in 2023, and I’m very grateful to the current NYJL President, Jeri Powell, for expanding this important initiative in 2025. The NYJL volunteers and its leadership have directly impacted the lives of our clients who are transitioning to permanent housing. These kits help them feel welcome in their new home and ensure that they no longer have to worry about obtaining their new apartment essentials as they make this transition. Overall, the HomeNow kits help instill peace of mind as these New Yorkers return to self-sufficiency.
