Life Through Another Lens: Belinda Zhang

“Life Through Another Lens” features stories of NYJL members, in their own words, to shed light on how we experience the world and the NYJL through different lenses informed by our individual identities. In this edition, NYJL member Belinda Zhang shares more about her story and what the League means to her.

  1. What prompted you to become a member of the New York Junior League, and how long have you been a member?

I first became involved with the Junior League as a vendor at Golden Tree [the NYJL’s annual holiday shopping event], and the experience was truly unforgettable. I met so many inspiring, driven, and supportive women who created such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It made me want to be a part of this incredible community. This year marks my third year returning to Golden Tree as both a vendor and a member, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Over the years, I’ve formed meaningful friendships with fellow vendors, and Golden Tree has become more than just an event—it’s a tradition and a yearly reunion where we come together to celebrate and support one another. Since becoming a member of the League, I’ve joined the Membership Engagement Events committee and am now involved with the Mothers Affinity Group, where I have the privilege of helping to create family-friendly gatherings and events for moms.

  1. How do you identify yourself?

I identify as a mother, daughter, sister, friend, and a New Yorker. Although I wasn’t born and raised in New York, this city has captured my heart and spirit after living here for over a decade. New York has given me countless opportunities and moments of gratitude, shaping who I am today. It constantly challenges me to grow, adapt, and thrive in ways I never imagined.

  1. What is one of your favorite memories or anecdotes from your time at the League?

Golden Tree will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the reason I joined the League in the first place. Beyond that, I’ve cherished all the family-friendly events like Halloween and the Easter Egg Hunt. Planning these events with my teammates was such a rewarding experience. Seeing families come together, kids laughing, and the joy reflected in their eyes amidst the beautiful decorations is a feeling like no other. It’s those small, heartfelt moments that remind me why I love being part of this community.

  1. How would you describe the culture of the League?

The League’s culture is vibrant, diverse, and deeply enriching. It’s a tapestry of women from different backgrounds and walks of life, united by a shared purpose of giving back and lifting each other up. The support, encouragement, and inspiration within the League make it a truly unique community. There’s a sense of belonging and collaboration here, where everyone brings something valuable to the table, creating a colorful and dynamic environment that fosters growth, connection, and positivity.

  1. What would you recommend one read/watch that reflects your experience as a League member and beyond?

I would recommend The Gilded Age TV series. The show beautifully captures New York society during a time when philanthropy, community, and leadership were being shaped by prominent families like the Astors—whose home, the Astor House, is now the NYJL headquarters. Additionally, the League’s founder, Mary Harriman, came from that same period, making the show feel even more connected to the organization’s roots. Her vision of community and service grew from the very traditions and social movements depicted in The Gilded Age. The series offers a compelling look at the historical roots that continue to inspire and shape the League today. Watching The Gilded Age feels like a window into the historical foundations of the League, celebrating the legacy of women coming together to make an impact in their communities.
