The Single Parent Resource Center Honors the NYJL

Single Parents Resource Center

On October 21, The Single Parent Resource Center (SPRC) honored The New York Junior League at their Fall Fete held at the Museum of the City of New York. SPRC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping New York City’s single parent families survive and thrive.

In accepting the award, NYJL President Stacey Lawrence Lee commented, “The NYJL is touched to receive an honor by such a caring and needed organization. SPRC provides critical services to single parents in need and we are thrilled that our partnership furthers their mission.”

Rosemarie E. Dackerman, NYJL Sustainer and Executive Director of SPRC, noted, “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to celebrate our close partnership with the NYJL. The NYJL volunteers provide valuable knowledge and resources to us as an organization and to our single parents. They have been instrumental in educating our single parents on how to best care for their families and we look forward to our partnership for years to come.”

For many years, multiple NYJL community committees have worked with SPRC. Volunteers from Cooking and Health Education for Families (C.H.E.F.) have hosted simultaneous but separate workshops — one for children, one for parents — that focused on healthy snacks. During the children’s workshop they played a game to help them learn about healthy snacking and then had the chance to make their own healthy snack of hummus and assorted vegetables and serve it to their parents.

Volunteers from the Done in a Day on Demand committee have helped with logistics support at fundraising events as well as provided volunteers for their Holiday Party and assisted children in decorating cookies and making presents for their parents.

In September of this year, at the Sustainer kick-off reception, Fall into Friendships, hosted by the Sustainer Evening committee, The Single Parent Resource Center was one of the community partner recipients of the school supply donations gathered at that event.

Furthermore, five NYJL volunteers serve on the Board of The Single Parent Resource Center. Board members include Deane Allen Gilliam, who serves as President, Betsey Steeger, who serves as Secretary, Amber-Noelle Anthony, who serves as Assistant Treasurer, Crystal Matsibekker, and Nikkita Mehta. Many of these Board members were trained and placed by the NYJL’s Nonprofit Boards Clearinghouse committee. Also, outside of the NYJL volunteer base, the Nonprofit Boards Clearinghouse committee placed Nitesh Anand to The Single Parent Resource Center’s Board.

In addition, many Board members and staff of The Single Parent Resource Center have attended the New York Junior League’s annual Forum for Nonprofits.

Given the strong connection to The Single Parent Resource Center, many NYJL volunteers, including members of the Board of Directors and Management Council as well as many Past NYJL Presidents, joined NYJL President Stacey Lawrence Lee at the event. The NYJL thanks those who were able to attend or donated to The Single Parent Resource Center in honor of this award for the NYJL.
