NYJL Calls for Immediate Passage of Paid Family Leave Legislation – There’s Still Time to Help!
On March 17, 2016, the Advocates for Public Policy committee (APP) joined the New York Paid Family Leave Coalition in Albany to hold a press conference calling for immediate passage of a strong bill that would include 12 weeks of job protected paid family leave with two-thirds of employees weekly wages for all private sector workers regardless of where they are employed. This is critical legislation as there are currently 6.4 million New Yorkers who do not have access to a Paid Family Leave program and they should not have to choose between their families and a paycheck.
Later that day, APP and the NY Paid Family Leave Coalition urged legislators to make New York next, delivering over 20,000 postcards and signatures from constituents to Senate Leadership.
“What an inspiring day! This legislation will give New Yorkers the ability to care for a sick or dying loved one, or welcome a new baby to the family, without having to worry about how to pay their bills. I am so proud to be part of such an amazing group of women advocates as we work towards making NY the next state to provide a Paid Leave program,” said committee co-chair Sara Kern.
Governor Andrew Cuomo kicked off the year by championing Paid Family Leave in his 2016 State of the State and including his Paid Family Leave proposal in the 2017 budget. The Governor’s priority now is to stand firm on a strong Paid Family Leave program and pass this bill as part of the state budget on April 1.
CALL TO ACTION
The next two weeks are crucial and as a result, we are asking all NYJL volunteers to call or email their Senator to let them know they support a strong Paid Family Leave program in New York by texting PaidLeave to 877877 or calling 844-254-6882. You can also download a Take Action email template.
With your support, we can work together to keep the pressure on Senate Leadership and keep the momentum going for this important policy reform!
