NYJL Steps to Success committee gives tips for applying to jobs online

Steps to Success is the New York Junior League’s premier job skills training committee, helping under-served populations with resume writing, cover letter writing, and interview skills. Steps to Success works with seven community partners ranging from 8th graders to middle-aged adults.

Steps to Success has worked with the English-Speaking Union for the last four years and it is one of the committee’s most successful partnerships. Volunteers help new, and often highly educated, immigrants learn how to secure a job within the United States market.

Earlier this year, we joined a session focused on coaching qualified professionals from different countries on how to secure a job in the United States. The room quickly filled with professionals from all different cultural backgrounds. NYJL volunteers introduced the lesson of the day: “How to Apply for Jobs (Online).”

Kicking off with some “Dos and Don’ts,” the volunteers reviewed the job application checklist: resume, cover letter, information required to fill out an application, and what to present once someone is offered a position. The core of the session focused on LinkedIn and using your online presence to enhance the job search – starting with how to select a professional photo! Speakers highlighted tips on how to add keywords to your profile and showcase skills and experiences throughout. Because job seekers in the room came from all different backgrounds and languages, volunteers gave suggestions on how to highlight strengths through uploading videos or work products. Lastly, the volunteers explained that this is a primary resource recruiters use when seeking candidates for a certain role – stressing the importance of an online presence when applying to jobs.

Volunteers assisted with tough questions such as: “What is appropriate to say when a recruiter reaches out to me online?” and “What is the right timing, and how can I negotiate my salary?” Volunteers jumped in to provide general experiences and helpful tips on how to communicate appropriate responses.

Ending the presentation with a fun “pop quiz” on the session, the volunteers closed by pairing with participants to answer their personal questions on anything from resume-writing to how to follow-up with an interviewer.

The partnership between the Steps to Success committee and the English-Speaking Union is a great, hands-on way to connect with people from all different backgrounds and assist with something many of our NYJL volunteers can relate to – mastering the job search!
