Forum for Nonprofits celebrates 30 years since first Conference on Volunteerism


NYJL hosts 200 attendees at the 1991 Conference on Volunteerism, “Leading the Way: Partners in Volunteerism” at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

The New York Junior League Forum for Nonprofits will host its 15th annual conference on April 26, 2017, over 30 years after its first Conference on Volunteerism.

The tradition began in 1981 with a conference aimed at building a state-wide coalition of nonprofit organizations to promote passage of proposed state charitable contributions legislation. A decade later, in celebration of the League’s 90th anniversary, the NYJL hosted a conference promoting teen volunteerism, “Leading the Way: Partners in Volunteerism” in 1991. During this conference, 200 nonprofit professionals and community leaders attended workshops on how to recruit and motivate young people, and enable community organizations and schools to work together more effectively, causes still important to the NYJL today.  In 2001, The Conference on Volunteerism focusing on “Motivating and Retaining Volunteers” was launched in honor of the NYJL’s centennial year.

All 3 events were a success and the interest and need for educational opportunities for the nonprofit community was clear!  Because of this, the NYJL decided to host the Conference on Volunteerism, which would be re-named the NYJL Forum for Nonprofits in 2010, on an annual basis.

For the past 15 years, the conference has focused on topics such as attracting, motivating and retaining volunteers; utilizing technology; fundraising and other topics of interest from small to mid-sized nonprofits in the community.  Themes such as “Finances, Fundraising and Facebooking for Philanthropy” and “Thriving in Thrifty Times” continue to attract course participants.  Recently, the conference has included keynote lectures and moderated expert panels discussions on topics such as “Finding Common Ground” in partnerships “Generational Giving.”
